Are dogs able to retain information?

people say that dogs wont remember when they bit you but what if there was lot of yelling and aggressive behavior from both parties? wouldn't that be a significant event from an evolutionary perspective. If facing danger but the animal forgets where and how it occurred, the animal is more likely to face that event several times again and endanger its life.
