What happened before the big bang?

Just watched a BBC documentary on this subject and felt that all the answers that are currently being looked at, while clever, didn't answer the question: they all lead to the question "well what happened before that?". Are we looking in the wrong direction? What I believe we have to look at first is "where did physics come from?". What about a random universe that created rules in a kind of evolutionary way out of chaos - is that possible?
