Do you think it's possible that advanced alien life forms on other planets could have evolved to be peaceable?

For when you look at human being's we have evolved to become the successfull super advanced predator we are through being ruthless. The evolutionary process is a bit of a competitive might always wins type of struggle. The more ruthless stronger fittest creature comes out on top. But perhaps human's need not have been as they are ie out there somewhere perhaps the evolutionary stuggle produced a supremely intelligent being with much much greater empathy and that's much much less violent etc than humans. Or given the nature of the evolutionary process perhaps this is not possible.
