Why do all organisms eventually die?

I understand that over time free radicals destroy cells and corrupt DNA. From an evolutionary perspective though, wouldn't an immortal organism be able to produce far more offspring than a mortal one? I know that as we grow older our bodies begin to fail, but if we can generate those destroyed tissues, why don't we? And why not just evolve to the point where individual cells can destroy their own free radicals?
